From the Workshop: The Story of the Koru Chandelier

Step behind the curtain at our Hertfordshire workshops and discover the intricate process behind one of our most captivating designs – the Koru chandelier. More than just a light, Koru is an ode to modern craftsmanship — a harmonious blend of innovation, precision engineering, and traditional British metalwork.

Every Koru begins as a vision of balance between strength and softness, form and function. Inspired by the natural world, the design draws from the unfurling fern fronds of its namesake, the Koru – a symbol of new life, growth, and continuity. This organic inspiration is brought to life through the interplay of hand-carved alabaster and finely crafted metalwork, creating a sculptural composition that transforms any space it inhabits.

Each chain link is individually hand-carved from solid alabaster by our skilled artisans, who work carefully to reveal the stone’s natural translucency and delicate veining. The carving process requires both patience and precision – every curve is refined by hand, ensuring that no two links are ever alike. Once shaped, the alabaster is meticulously polished to achieve a subtle, luminous glow that enhances its organic character.

The metal components – crafted from solid brass or a selection of bespoke finishes – are engineered to clasp the alabaster links seamlessly, bringing together artistry and technical mastery. This fusion of craft and engineering allows each link to be individually illuminated, revealing the quiet drama within the stone as light travels through its surface, highlighting its natural variations and depth.

As with all Cameron Design House pieces, Koru is designed with versatility and individuality in mind. Available in a variety of lengths, configurations, and metal finishes, it can be tailored to suit its architectural surroundings – whether suspended from the ceiling, stretched gracefully between two walls, or flowing elegantly from ceiling to wall. Our complimentary design service ensures that each piece is carefully configured for its intended space, creating a perfect harmony between light, material, and architecture.

Every Koru chandelier is handmade to order by our artisans in Hertfordshire. The use of natural alabaster means that each piece is truly one-of-a-kind – a reflection of the stone’s inherent beauty and the craftsman’s hand. Bespoke finishes and painted elements can also be incorporated to align with specific project requirements, ensuring that every Koru remains as distinctive as the space it illuminates.

The result is a celebration of contemporary British design – where traditional craftsmanship meets modern innovation, and every detail speaks to the art of making.
